Late last week, I got word from my army unit that we are going to Balad, Iraq for a year starting in October. This news was a big surprise to me. Right now, I need to get things in order, which will include closing down my law practice and either finishing or handing off my cases over the next 45 days.
This will be hard on my family. I’ll be fine, though, and will be about as safe as possible on the largest US base in Iraq. They have movie theaters, swimming pools, and five gyms in addition to a shopping mall and several restaurants. I’ll be doing legal work to help soldiers on the base. I’ll never be allowed off of the base, so like I say, it’s pretty darned safe for me at least. The tough part will be the separation from my family. So don’t worry about me, but I wanted to let you know about this news. I do hope that things will change and that I won’t have to go, and nothing is final until I’m actually over there.
